One statistic that came out of the conference on the topic of sustainable varietal innovation as a factor in the growth of production and consumption this Thursday, March 30, was that Morocco produces 2% of the world’s strawberry crop.

Another figure quoted: is that of the production of strawberries in Morocco. This increased by 18% during the 2019-2021 period, This type of culture faced several problems, especially in the Mediterranean, something that could hinder this trend, Climate change, water scarcity, and pesticide regulations were mentioned.

Nevertheless, these difficulties do not seem to worry Amine Bennani, a member of the Moroccan Association of Small Fruit Producers, present at this conference, and who declared that Morocco’s objective was to double its strawberry exports by 2030 ( 180,000 tons).

The issues described above also had solutions that were addressed. The proposal to build genetic improvement activities capable of supporting the changes that the industry needs today was made famously by Carmela Suriano, director of the company.
