The opposition tabled a motion in Parliament on Wednesday to reclaim historically claimed land from South Africa, the small kingdom of Lesotho. The opposition motion was debated in parliament on Wednesday.

The country, with a population of 2.2 million, is entirely landlocked within South Africa.

The motion by the Basotho Convenient Movement (BCM) MP seeks to declare certain South African provinces as part of the Kingdom.

The provinces in question are the central province of the Free State, as well as areas in four other provinces.

The MP told the press that if the opposition succeeds in passing the motion, a process will be initiated to enshrine these land claims in law.

The motion is based on a 1962 UN resolution recognizing the right to self-determination and independence of the people of Lesotho (Basutoland).
