De Mistura Meets with Spain’s Representative to the United Nations for Sahara Conflict Consultations

The Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for the Sahara conflict, Staffan de Mistura, held informal consultations with Agustín Santos Maraber, the Ambassador of Spain and Permanent Representative to the United Nations. This meeting was part of de Mistura’s ongoing consultations with various actors in the Sahara conflict.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed the developments of the Sahara issue in light of the upcoming session to be held in April, based on the recommendations of UN Security Council Resolution No. 2654 on the Sahara.

The session is obligated to introduce the Secretary-General of the United Nations or his personal envoy to inform the members of the Security Council of the conflict’s developments.

De Mistura updated the Spanish Ambassador on his efforts to revive the political process of the Sahara conflict, seeking a consensual formula for a just and lasting political solution.

the UN Special Envoy emphasized bridging differences between stakeholders and exploring the practical role of “Minurso” while considering bringing concerned parties to the same table.

The Spanish Ambassador affirmed Spain’s support for the United Nations’ efforts to resolve the conflict and settle it politically. he also expressed his encouragement for “Minurso” to implement its mandate to monitor and support the ceasefire agreement.

The Ambassador stressed de Mistura’s support in his work and the continued provision of logistical support. He noted that it is necessary for Hilal to provide a private plane for de Mistura to travel and meet with the various stakeholders in the file.

During the conversation, the Spanish ambassador outlined Madrid’s position on the Sahara conflict, expressing support for the autonomy initiative as a basis for resolving the Sahara conflict, he also expressed Spain’s willingness to contribute positively to finding a formula for a solution.
