Canary Islands President, Ángel Víctor Torres, has emphasized the positive impact of Spain and Morocco’s “good” relationship on the border regions, he noted that the current momentum in their relations will benefit both present and prospects.

A local official from the Department of Migration in Morocco also highlighted the benefits of improved relations, stating that a decrease in irregular immigration by 40-60% in the Canary Islands signals a “new” momentum for relations.

During a meeting with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, Torres reiterated the importance of protecting the border ocean islands and praised the Kingdom’s role in this regard.

The spokesperson also noted a significant decline in migrant arrivals to Spanish soil in the past month, crediting the increased vigilance resulting from improved relations between the two countries.

The official in the Canary Archipelago warned that crises between the two countries tend to result in a dramatic increase in migrant flow, making the situation difficult to control.
