2023 Terrorism Index Report: Burkina Faso is the African Country most Affected by Terrorism

The latest Global Terrorism Index 2023 report, published by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), has revealed that the number of victims of terrorist attacks in the Sahel region has increased by 2,000% over the past 15 years.

According to the report, with 8,564 victims of terrorism, Burkina Faso is the most affected country on the continent and the second most affected country in the world.

Burkina recorded 310 terrorist incidents in 2022 against 224 in 2021.

The Sahel region accounts for the most deaths due to terrorism in 2022, according to the report.

Indeed, in the Sahel, 22,074 people were killed in 6,408 terrorist attacks between 2007 and 2022.

Most terrorist attacks are perpetrated by armed groups such as the Islamic State and the Shebabs.

According to the Global Terrorism Index (GTI), terrorist attacks worldwide have now decreased by 28% in 2022, for the first time since 2019.
