After the Angolan Assembly approved the dispatch of 500 soldiers to the east of the DRC, the president of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Félix Tshisekedi, travelled to Luanda to meet the Angolan head of state, João Lourenço.

The meeting between the two heads of state was held behind closed doors, according to the Minister of State and head of the Military House, Francisco Furtado, explaining that the contingent will only be moved if conditions are met in the cantonment areas.

He added that a delegation from the Ah Doc mechanism, including officers from the General Staff of the Armed Forces, is visiting the planned areas to check if the conditions are met.

Francisco Furtado believes that all parties must commit to peace, namely the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and the M23.

The eastern DRC is plagued by repeated ceasefire violations by the Rwandan army and the M23 rebels.

Angola is playing a mediating role in this conflict, in which Rwanda is accused of supporting the M3 armed group, something Kigali denies.
