Morocco wants to invest 6.1 billion dirhams ($580 million) in the development of its tourist industry up until 2026 to increase visitor numbers and generate foreign exchange, the government announced on Friday.

According to the prime minister’s office, the government intends to increase spending on marketing, create more tourist attractions, renovate existing hotels, build new ones, and hire more people to work in the industry.

By 2026, it hopes to draw 17.5 million visitors, up from 11 million in 2017. Morocco welcomed 13 million tourists in 2019.

In 2018, the sector’s revenue exceeded 2019 levels, more than doubling to 91 billion dirhams from 2021.
