A statement from the Malawian presidency has declared a state of disaster in several areas of the south of the country affected by Cyclone Freddy, which is causing real devastation.

According to the authorities, Cyclone Freddy has killed over 99 people and injured dozens more in Malawi. The death toll may rise further, according to the Disaster Management Agency.

The region of Malawi’s economic capital, Blantyre, alone has recorded 85 deaths, which is catastrophic.

Some of the residents said that government rescue workers are slow to arrive and that residents are contributing to the rescue operations especially as the rescuers lack adequate equipment.

Meteorologists have called this Cyclone Freddy the longest on record.

According to the United Nations, more than 11,000 people in Malawi have been displaced by the storm in the country.
