To mitigate the consequences of a strike that has resulted in deaths, the South African army has indicated that military medical personnel has been deployed to several public hospitals in South Africa.

The South African Army Health Service spokesperson told the press that the army received a request from the Minister of Health to assist in the face of the ongoing strike.

This health personnel have been deployed to hospitals since last week and will remain as required. In addition, these soldiers are tasked with securing access to hospitals.

According to South Africa’s Health Minister, Joe Phaahla, at least four patients had died and their deaths could be directly linked to the strike, as strikers had blocked access to various hospitals last week, preventing patients from entering.
