Russia is to donate fertilizer to African countries in order to gain their diplomatic support and strengthen its influence on the continent.

Approximately 260,000 tonnes of fertilizer will be provided by Russia to countries on the continent. This was announced on Monday by the Russian ambassador to Malawi.

Malawi will get 20,000 tons of fertilizer, manufactured by Uralchem-Ukalkali, according to the statement of its director of the Southern Africa branch.

The Russian government hopes that this aid will put pressure on African leaders to remove the international sanctions it is undergoing.

The second Russia-Africa summit to be held in St. Petersburg at the end of July would be an opportunity to make this pressure, according to the Russian diplomat.
