The Nigerien police have indicated, in a statement read on national television, that a civilian was injured during an armed attack on the border post between Niger and Burkina Faso.

The heavily armed men attacked and set fire to the Makalondi border post. The wounded man who was shot was evacuated to Niamey, the police said.

The statement said the Makalondi special police station was the target of an attack by as yet unidentified armed bandits on Saturday.

This is not the first time that the Makalondi police station has been subject to jihadist attacks. In December 2021, six people, including a gendarme, two customs officers, and three civilians were killed in a similar attack.

Thus, the commune of Makalondi is located in the so-called “three borders” zone between Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali, which has become a haven for Sahelian jihadists.
