Hundreds of people held a demonstration in Tunis today, demanding the freedom of more than 20 opponents of President Kais Saied, who have been arrested in recent weeks.

The protesters belong to opposition parties such as the National Salvation Front (FSN), the main opposition coalition.

They brandished the Tunisian flag with pictures of the detainees, while chanting “freedom, freedom, down with the coup”.

The demonstration was normally banned by the prefect of Tunis, but the protesters defied the ban and gathered and broke through the police barriers, heading towards Habib Bourguiba Avenue.

The demonstration was in protest against the wave of arrests by the Tunisian authorities against well-known politicians and businessmen, accusing them of “plotting against state security”.
