A group of 15 members out of the 25 that comprise the General Assembly of the Andean Parliament have expressed their support for the sovereignty, national and territorial integrity of Morocco in a petition to the President of the Parliament.

The members also expressed their support for the autonomy initiative as a solution to the dispute over the Sahara.

The Moroccan parliament released a statement detailing the Andean parliamentarians’ position, in which they affirmed their support for peaceful resolution through civilized dialogue.

The petition also mentioned that the Andean Parliament had taken a position supportive of political dialogue and parliamentary cooperation during a session held in El-Ayoun, Morocco, on July 4, 2022.

During this session, the Moroccan Parliament represented by the Speakers of the House of Representatives and Councilors, informed the Andean parliamentarians of the situation and showcased the socio economic development, education, and medical facilities in the region.

The petition referenced the last official decision taken by the Andean Parliament on this matter during a meeting in Bucaramanga, Colombia, on October 27, 2022, where a unanimous vote was passed on a resolution affirming support for political sovereignty, national unity, and territorial integrity of recognized sovereign states by the United Nations.

The resolution also expressed support for the Moroccan autonomy initiative as a possible solution to the regional conflict within the framework of United Nations resolutions.

To ensure continuity in the practices followed by previous presidents of the Andean Parliament, the Moroccan Parliament signed a memorandum with the former, allowing Moroccan representatives to attend the sessions of the General Assembly. It is expected that the current President will abide by the contents of the agreement and extend invitations to the Moroccan delegation as an observing member and advanced partner in this regional parliamentary body.
