The One Forest Summit, initiated by Gabonese and French heads of state Ali Bongo Ondimba and Emmanuel Macron and dedicated to the protection of tropical forests, began today in Libreville, Gabon and will continue until Thursday.

The aim of this summit is to find “concrete solutions” for the sustainable management of tropical forests, the economic development of forest countries, improve the conservation of forests in the world and contribute to the protection of the climate and species.

On the agenda of the summit will be themes such as the search for funding, the promotion of “more sustainable value chains” for wood products, and the promotion of scientific cooperation between the three major global forest basins.

The ultimate goal of the summit is not to adopt declarations, according to the organization, but to implement the objectives set by the Paris Climate Agreement (2015) and the Montreal COP15 on biodiversity (2022).

The summit, which will focus on the forests of the Congo Basin according to the organizers, is “more than important to sound the alarm” on the management of forest ecosystems.

Heads of state will take part in the summit: French President Emmanuel Macron, expected in Libreville on Wednesday evening, as well as the heads of state of Congo-Brazzaville, Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea, and Chad.
