Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, called during a session held by the Spanish Senate on Monday, not to confuse Spain’s role with that of the United Nations.

Albares said that the United Nations is the one that should propose a solution to this conflict, and what Spain should do is support the UN resolutions. He pledged not to interfere in the issue of the Moroccan Sahara, stressing that his country is convinced of the absolute centrality of the United Nations in the search for a solution.

The Spanish Minister added that Madrid’s position on the Sahara is governed by supreme interests, highlighting that Spain considers the autonomy proposal “the most serious, credible, and realistic basis.”

Albares stressed that the improvement of diplomatic relations with Morocco has benefited the Canary Islands, Andalusia, Ceuta, and Melilla, He said that a good relationship with a neighbor with whom it shares a land border, as he put it, is a “state policy” in which the opposition should accompany the government.
