The African Union condemned the Tunisian president’s statements directed at migrants in his country from elsewhere in Africa and warned of “racist hate speech” that could cause harm.

The Union said in a statement that it had called the representative of Tunisia to an urgent meeting to register “deep shock and concern at the form and content” of the remarks, on behalf of the continental bloc.

the AUC Chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat, said AU member states have an obligation to “treat with dignity all migrants, wherever they come from, refrain from racist hate speech that can put people in harm’s way, and prioritize their safety and human rights.”
