President of the United States Joe Biden urged candidates and parties to accept the results as reported by the nation’s electoral commission on Thursday, calling for the impending presidential election in Nigeria to be peaceful and transparent.

Out of a total of over 200 million people, more than 93 million Nigerians are registered to vote in the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections on Saturday. These elections are thought to be the most competitive since the country returned to democracy in 1999.

In a statement, Biden praised the peace agreement that was reached in Nigeria the day before, making reference to a promise made on Wednesday by all candidates to pursue legal action if they had any complaints.

“By signing this commitment, the parties and candidates have committed to accept the election results, as declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and to promote a peaceful transfer of power,” he stated.
