According to a press release from the South African state-owned electricity company ‘Eskom’, its CEO, Andre de Ruyter, who has been leading the company since 2020, has been dismissed from his position due to the energy crisis the country is facing.

De Ruyter had declared his concession last December and was predicted to remain until the end of March as a notice period to look for a new leader.

Mr de Ruyter has previously questioned the government’s political will to fight against endemic corruption within Eskom.

Eskom said that de Ruyter “did not need to serve the remainder of his notice period”.

For more than a decade, South Africa has been facing an energy crisis due to aging power generation units that often break down. In 2020, this crisis reached an all-time high, prompting Eskom to move to higher levels of power shedding.
