According to the National Office of Risk and Disaster Management (BNGRC), four people died following tropical cyclone Freddy, which hit the Big Island overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday.

The dreaded cyclone Freddy hit the southeast coast of Madagascar on Tuesday evening around 7:30 p.m. local time, bringing with it strong winds blowing at 130 km/h, gusts estimated at more than 180 km/h, and rough seas with waves around 10 m high.

The latest report reports four dead. “16,660 people are affected” and there is no missing at this stage, adds the report. Nearly 3,300 homes were flooded, and almost as many were damaged. More than 11,000 people have been displaced, most of whom have taken preventive shelter in emergency accommodation.

This “very intense tropical cyclone,” so named for its strong meteorological parameters, made landfall about 30 km north of Mananjara, an impact site almost identical to the last two cyclones that devastated the island.

The population was already huge in the streets to see the harm caused by the passage of Freddy.
