A statement issued by the Office of Malawi President and the Cabinet revealed that Lazarus McCarthy Shakwera has dismissed eight ministers in the first cabinet reshuffle of 2023.

Unlike in the previous cabinet reshuffle, The president did not allocate a ministerial portfolio to himself and deputy Saulos Chilima but rather reduced the ministerial positions from 30 to 25, including deputy ministers.

The exemption included the Community Development and Social Welfare Minister Patricia Kaliati, Information Minister Gospel Kazako, ruling Malawi Congress Party’s Secretary General Eisenhower Mkaka, and Local Government Minister Blessings Chinsinga.

In his New Year’s speech, the Malawian president pledged to appoint a new government focused on maximizing the country’s limited resources to improve service delivery.
