South African President Cyril Ramaphosa made a statement on Sunday at the ANC National Executive Council lekgotla (agora) in relation to the electricity crisis.

Ramaphosa highlighted the impact of the electricity crisis on economic growth and investment.

Ramaphosa, who is also president of South Africa’s ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC), noted that load shedding is harming households, and businesses and affecting the welfare and security of the population.

He added that load-shedding blocks investment and job creation. As a result, economic growth cannot be sustained.

In this sense, he said that one of the most urgent challenges is to resolve the energy crisis by ending load shedding.

In order to overcome this crisis, the president recalled that he had signed agreements with independent power producers for 26 renewable energy projects, which will generate about 2,800 megawatts (MW) of electricity.
