Antonio Guterres saddened by South Africa gas tanker explosion

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed in a statement his deep sorrow at the deaths of dozens of civilians in a gas tanker explosion in South Africa’s Gauteng province.

According to his spokesperson, Mr Guterres expressed his condolences to the families of the dead, the government and the people of South Africa.
The tragic accident claimed the lives of 34 people, including 11 health workers from a nearby hospital.

In the same statement, the UN Secretary-General wished the injured a speedy recovery and expressed his empathy for the damaged infrastructure, wishing for its rapid reconstruction.

The explosion occurred at the end of December when a truck filled with gas got stuck under a tunnel near a hospital in Boksburg, about 40 km east of Johannesburg.
