South Africa has taken over the presidency of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) from China with the ambition to contribute to decision-making in international organisations.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said the group must actively participate in developing new decision-making mechanisms in the UN and other international organisations to create a fairer and more stable world order.

South African Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor said that during its chairmanship, South Africa plans to provide strategic leadership to the group and set the priorities and agenda in close cooperation with the other members.

The South African diplomatic spokesperson told the Russian press that Pretoria welcomes its membership of the group and promises to maintain the same level of effectiveness during its one-year chairmanship, adding that cooperation between member countries in the economic, political, cultural and social fields is a priority.
