South African authorities have announced that the explosion of a gas tanker in the Boksburg area of Johannesburg, on Saturday morning, left 10 people dead and around 40 seriously injured, including six firefighters and 14 health workers.

According to the Emergency Management Services (EMS), the tanker, carrying liquefied petroleum gas, became stuck under the South African port of Richards Bay, close to the Tambo Memorial Hospital and to homes.

Firefighters set out to extinguish a small fire, but this did not prevent the truck from exploding, causing damage to the railway infrastructure on the bridge.

Videos and photos circulating on social networks showed the explosion near a residential area.
