Residents of Goma, a town in the Democratic Republic of Congo, voiced yesterday their disagreement with the UN Security Council’s decision to extend the UN peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO).

The solution extending the UN peacekeeping workforce until 20 December 2023, firmly condemns all national and foreign armed groups working in the country and demands a halt to all violence and destabilising actions.

Several residents have come forward, telling the media that MONUSCO has done nothing to protect civilians since it took office 22 years ago.

President Felix Tshisekedi has previously called a meeting to reassess MONUSCO’s presence, when the peacekeepers were accused of using force to retaliate against protesters, resulting in civilian deaths.
