The Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, said on Friday that the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande Marlasca, has his full support and appreciation, describing him as “a great Minister of the Interior who performs his tasks in strict compliance with the rules and the law and from a human rights perspective.”

According to the newspaper “Alvaro de Melilla”, Sanchez said in a press conference after the Spanish-Portuguese summit: “The Minister of the Interior has my full confidence, and I believe that throughout his judicial and political life he did his work efficiently and honestly, always complied with the law and defended human rights.”

The spokesman added, according to the same source, that Marlaska will attend parliament, and there “will provide an answer to the government administration about the tragedy on Melilla’s border with Nador, which killed 23 immigrants, with complete transparency, because there is nothing to hide.”

The Spanish Prime Minister also indicated that he is cooperating with the various and open investigations, reiterating the latter’s solidarity with the victims, and recalling that “many of these tragedies on the borders begin several kilometres away from them, with the lack of freedoms and opportunities in their countries of origin,” as he put it.
