Former Gabonese President Ali Bongo, who was overthrown on August 30th, 2023, recently saw his wife Sylvia and their son Noureddin for the first time since the coup. The meeting, which took place in the presence of the transitional president Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, was brief and inconclusive. The status of the former head of state remains uncertain.

In Gabon, transitional President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema is currently on an extensive tour across the country. On July 17th, 2024, he arrived in Haut-OgoouĂ©, the stronghold of the Bongo family, who had ruled the country almost uninterruptedly until the coup. This visit provided an opportunity for Ali Bongo’s entourage to speak out and highlight the ongoing situation of the former president, who remains confined to his residence in Libreville.

According to reliable sources, Ali Bongo was able to see his wife Sylvia and son Noureddin in person for the first time since the coup. Both Sylvia and Noureddin are currently detained at the central prison. The family reunion was organized a few weeks ago at the presidential residence.

However, according to a close associate, the visit did not end well. General Oligui Nguema reportedly suggested that Ali Bongo seek medical treatment abroad. Bongo declined, insisting that he would not leave the country without his wife and son. Consequently, the general abruptly ended the family meeting.

The situation surrounding Ali Bongo remains contentious, with his associates continually expressing concern over his treatment and the conditions of his confinement. The unfolding developments highlight the ongoing political tension in Gabon following the dramatic change in leadership.
