In the Central African Republic, opposition figure Crépin Mboli-Goumba was sentenced this Wednesday morning, March 27th, to a one-year suspended prison term.

Additionally, he was ordered to pay 80 million CFA francs in damages to four magistrates who had filed a complaint against him for defamation and insults. Mboli-Goumba has announced his intention to appeal the ruling.

The coordinator of the Republican Bloc for the Defense of the Constitution was arrested at Bangui airport on March 3rd as he was leaving for Cameroon for medical reasons. Just ten days prior, he had criticized a judiciary he described as “corrupt up to the highest echelons” and likened it to a “mafia” serving individual interests.
