In a devastating turn of events, Mr. Olabode Olawuyi, a veteran veterinary technologist and dedicated staff member of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Osun state, met a tragic end on Monday when he was attacked and killed by a lion under his care.

Olawuyi, who had been entrusted with the care of the university’s zoological department and specifically the lion, was carrying out his duties of feeding the animal when the unthinkable occurred – he was viciously attacked by the very creature he tended to.

Despite the valiant efforts of his colleagues to rescue him from the ferocious lion, their attempts proved futile, resulting in Olabode’s untimely demise.

The news of the incident sent shockwaves throughout the university community, prompting an immediate response from the management. In a somber turn of events, an ongoing meeting led by the Vice Chancellor was abruptly halted as news of the tragedy spread.

Confirming the heartbreaking incident, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, expressed profound sadness over the loss of Olabode Olawuyi. He disclosed that the management team swiftly responded to the situation, with the lion in question subsequently euthanized as a precautionary measure.

The sudden and tragic loss of Mr. Olabode Olawuyi has left a profound impact on the OAU community, serving as a poignant reminder of the inherent risks associated with working closely with wild animals.
