NDLEA Arrests Alleged Drug Supplier to Insurgents

NDLEA operatives have apprehended a 42-year-old man, Ahmad Mohammed, for allegedly supplying drugs to insurgents in Borno State, Nigeria. The arrest was part of a larger operation targeting suspected drug traffickers and dealers in the region. According to the NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, Mohammed was intercepted at a checkpoint in Borno State on February 9th, where 20,000 capsules of tramadol were found in his possession. It is alleged that he was transporting the opioids to insurgents in the border town of Banki, situated between Nigeria and Cameroon.

In a separate incident, NDLEA operatives seized a truck transporting 367 jumbo bags of cannabis sativa, weighing over 4,000 kilograms, from Akure, Ondo state to Shabu area in Lafia, the state capital. Three suspects were arrested in connection with the drug seizure. Additionally, in Abuja, FCT, operatives intercepted a truck carrying compressed cannabis sativa and arrested two individuals. These operations underscore the NDLEA’s continued efforts to combat drug trafficking and related criminal activities across Nigeria.

Further arrests were made in various states, including Ondo, Edo, Kano, Anambra, and Lagos, where individuals were apprehended for trafficking in illicit substances such as cannabis, tramadol, and codeine syrup. Among those arrested were a six-month pregnant woman and another lady in Anambra, along with two ladies in Lagos. The seizures and arrests demonstrate the widespread nature of the drug trade in Nigeria and the NDLEA’s commitment to addressing this issue through targeted enforcement actions.

The NDLEA also revealed that drug traffickers employ various methods to conceal illicit substances, such as spraying detergents on cannabis bags to suppress odor and hiding drugs in trucks carrying legitimate goods. Despite these challenges, the agency remains vigilant in its efforts to disrupt drug supply chains and hold perpetrators accountable. The recent operations serve as a warning to individuals involved in drug trafficking that law enforcement agencies are actively pursuing and apprehending offenders across the country.
