Zanzibar Authorities Enforce Ban on Maasai Carrying Traditional Weapons

Zanzibar authorities have implemented a ban on Maasai individuals from carrying swords and clubs in public spaces. The decision comes in response to incidents of violence involving hawkers and is aimed at maintaining public safety and order.

According to Urban Unguja District Commissioner Rashid Simai Msaraka, the ban was agreed upon after consultations with Maasai leaders in the region. Mr. Msaraka emphasized that the prohibition is in line with cultural considerations and is intended to prevent further conflicts in the area.

The enforcement of the ban is currently limited to the jurisdiction of Unguja Island, with Mr. Msaraka stating that it is effective “for the time being.” The decision follows an altercation in the Darajani marketplace involving an individual allegedly impersonating a Maasai, who assaulted a Stone Town Area officer.

Traditionally, Maasai men have carried swords and clubs as part of their cultural heritage, primarily for warfare and hunting purposes. However, these weapons have also become popular tourist souvenirs, contributing to their widespread presence in the region.

The ban on carrying traditional weapons reflects a proactive measure by Zanzibar authorities to address public safety concerns and mitigate the risk of further incidents of violence. It underscores the importance of balancing cultural practices with the need to maintain peace and security in the community.
