Arrest Made in Connection with Fatal Johannesburg CBD Fire Incident

A single arrest has been made in connection with the tragic building fire that claimed two lives and left at least four individuals injured in the heart of Johannesburg’s Central Business District (CBD). The incident, which occurred in the early hours of January 21, 2024, engulfed a structure on Commissioner Street, resulting in over 100 people being displaced.

City Manager Floyd Brink of Johannesburg confirmed that a woman has been charged with arson in connection to the devastating fire. The City Manager emphasized that the case has been transferred to the police for further investigations.

The City of Johannesburg is actively engaged in efforts to secure temporary housing solutions for those affected by the fire. Commissioner Street and Nugget Street remained closed to traffic as emergency services and investigators continued their work at the scene.

The fire, initially not reported to authorities, was detected through the city’s surveillance camera system installed across the CBD. City officials were able to swiftly deploy response teams and firefighting resources upon detecting the incident.
