Concluding the year 2023, Morocco’s Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ) showcases a robust tally in combating various forms of extremism, dismantling terrorist cells, and eradicating their hideouts, amid continuous international praise for Morocco’s efforts.

Morocco has successfully thwarted 500 terrorist projects and dismantled 215 terrorist cells since 2002, according to the latest official figures released in the ‘Achievements of the Ministry of Interior’ report for the fiscal year 2023.

In 2023, the BCIJ managed to dismantle six terrorist cells, leading to the arrest of 21 individuals in various preemptive operations spanning regions such as Nador, Oued Ed-Dahab, Souk El Arbaa, Tetouan, Larache, Tangier, and Inezgane Ait Melloul.

As customary, Morocco played a decisive role in sparing international partners from bloodshed in 2023. One notable intervention was the successful collaboration between Morocco and Spain, thwarting terrorist plots targeting the city of Nador and the occupied Melilla.

Once again, the U.S. Department of State, in its annual report on global counterterrorism for 2022, commended Morocco’s unique and comprehensive policy in foiling terrorist plots by strengthening vigilance and surveillance measures.”
