The tragic incident at the Impala Platinum mine has seen the death toll climb to 12, according to a statement released on Wednesday.
The mine reported that one of the workers who was hospitalized due to the accident has succumbed to injuries.
The incident occurred when a lift, carrying 86 miners, plunged to the bottom of a shaft on Monday afternoon. As a result, 74 miners sustained injuries, with some in critical condition. The mine has taken immediate action by suspending all underground operations requiring winding as investigations and inquiries into the incident continue.
