Andry Rajoelina, 49, has been reelected as the President of Madagascar following the first round of elections, in which ten opposition candidates had called for a boycott, announced the electoral commission on Saturday.

Mr. Rajoelina, embarking on his second term leading the large island in the Indian Ocean, secured just under 59% of the votes in the first round of the election held on November 16, according to the commission’s results presented at a press conference in Antananarivo. Approximately 46% of registered voters participated, as reported by the Malagasy Electoral Commission.
