Moise Katumbi, vying for the presidency, has assured the populace of Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s east that he will stand by them amidst the increasing threat of militia violence. He vows to prioritize security in the region should he emerge victorious in the upcoming December 20th election.

Addressing a spirited crowd at a Goma rally on Thursday evening, Moise Katumbi rallied hundreds of enthusiastic supporters in his pursuit to challenge President Felix Tshisekedi’s bid for a second term in the upcoming election scheduled for next month.

Among the myriad concerns influencing voters in the selection of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s next leader, security stands out as a pivotal issue. This choice holds significant weight in a nation that holds the distinction of being the world’s leading cobalt producer and the fifth-largest producer of copper.

The aftermath of a civil war that concluded at the turn of the century has given rise to a complex scenario in Congo’s mineral-rich eastern region. Various rival armed militia groups are engaged in persistent conflicts over control of land and valuable resources, shaping a challenging and volatile environment.

The escalation of conflict, primarily centered in the North Kivu and Ituri provinces, has witnessed a disturbing surge in recent years. This intensification is accompanied by ruthless attacks on civilians, resulting in the displacement of millions from their homes.
