Naira Marley finds himself at the center of a controversial case that has stirred emotions in Nigeria. Since Tuesday, October 3rd, he has been in police custody in Lagos in connection with the death of one of the musicians he was producing.

Abracadabra is one of the hit songs by Nigerian artist Naira Marley. However, his temporary disappearance from the music scene is not due to magic but rather a dark music-related legal case: the death, on September 12, of one of his proteges, a musician named Mohbad. The 27-year-old artist died under unexplained circumstances in Lagos, and the police are working to unravel the circumstances of his death.

Mohbad had a serious dispute with Marley’s music label, leading the dozen police officers assigned to the case to want to question the head of the Marlian Music label. Azeez Fashola, known as Naira Marley, returned from Europe by plane on Tuesday to face their questions. He wanted to address the flood of accusations on social media, where speculations and strong suspicions circulate, with many believing that Marley or his team might be linked to the death.

Marley stated that he wanted to meet with the police out of a sense of “truth and justice.” As a result, he is currently in police custody, and the outcome of the investigation will determine whether the afrobeat “bad boy” will return to the stage or face imprisonment.
