King Felipe VI of Spain has decided to nominate the leader of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party, Pedro Sánchez, to form the Spanish government. This comes after the leader of the People’s Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, failed to secure an absolute majority in two rounds of voting in the Spanish general elections.

According to Spanish media reports, the Head of State informed the President of the Spanish Parliament, Francina Armengol, of his proposal to appoint the acting Prime Minister to lead the government.

It is reported that Sánchez will now commence negotiations with parliamentary parties to form a government, including the People’s Party, except the far-right Vox party.

The leader of the People’s Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, failed to garner sufficient support to form a Spanish government, receiving only 172 votes in favor while 177 parliamentarians voted against his candidacy.
