Death has claimed Zoleka Mandela, the granddaughter of former South African President Nelson Mandela, at the age of 43, following a courageous battle with cancer, as confirmed by her family on Tuesday.

Zwelabo Mandela, the family spokesperson, stated that the writer was transported to the hospital on Monday for ongoing treatment. He said, “Zoleka has passed away, surrounded by her friends and family.”

Zoleka was the daughter of Zindzi Mandela, the youngest child of the anti-apartheid leader, and her first husband, Zwelibanzi Hlongwane.

The family of the granddaughter revealed that recent tests had shown that the disease had spread extensively in several parts of her body, including the brain and spinal cord.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation wrote in a message shared on social media: “We are saddened by the passing of our beloved granddaughter of Winnie (Mandela) and Madiba” (Nelson Mandela’s clan name).

They added, “Zoleka’s efforts in raising awareness about cancer prevention and her unwavering commitment to ending the stigma associated with the disease will continue to inspire us all.”
