Former Niger President Mahamadou Issoufou, who led the country from 2011 to 2021, has broken his media silence nearly three weeks after the July 26th coup that ousted his successor. In an interview with Jeune Afrique magazine, he vehemently denies the accusations of his involvement in the coup and expresses his deep concern about them. Issoufou states, “I strongly object to the accusations that I played a role in this coup. My stance has remained consistent. I demand the release of President Mohamed Bazoum and his restoration to office.”

Issoufou’s emergence from silence marks a significant moment, as he shares his thoughts on the crisis that has unfolded since the coup. “I maintain hope for a peaceful and negotiated resolution to the crisis,” he asserts in his conversation with Jeune Afrique. This interview represents the first time he has spoken to the media since the coup that unseated his successor. The former president expresses his astonishment at the coup and reiterates his call for the liberation of Mohamed Bazoum. His strategy continues to be centered on mediation, despite acknowledging its inherent difficulty.

In his dialogue with Jeune Afrique, Issoufou underscores that his demand for the release of President Bazoum and his reinstatement has not wavered for more than three weeks. He aligns himself with the stance of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), stating, “Like ECOWAS, I prioritize the path of negotiation.” He asserts that the use of force should be a last resort.

Additionally, Issoufou refutes any claims that he advocated for or imposed the retention of Abdourahamane Tiani, who now heads the National Council for the Safeguard of the People (CNSP) and orchestrated the coup, in his role as head of the presidential guard. “I have always refrained from intervening in favor of or against anyone,” he firmly asserts.

The accusations that he had a hand in the coup deeply affect Issoufou, as he confides, “I have taken great offense and felt a deep blow to my integrity due to these allegations. They are completely baseless.” He emphasizes, “Those spreading such rumors are the same individuals who, from day one, aimed to drive a wedge between Bazoum and me. However, our friendship has consistently prevailed.” He reveals that he maintains daily communication with the deposed president and urges careful consideration of this fact.
