Tensions continue to rise in Libya following the United Nations Support Mission in Libya’s (UNSMIL) statement, which has drawn strong reactions within the nation. The Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives expressed its disapproval of the UN mission’s portrayal of the roadmap efforts as “one-sided” and deceptive, emphasizing that it undermines the significance of the consensus between the House of Representatives and the State Council. Last week, 60 Libyan deputies also criticized the UN mission for seemingly working against Libyan reconciliation.

Political analyst Azaddin Aqeel pointed out the contradictions in the UN mission’s stance, as it advocates for immediate elections while opposing the roadmap’s steps, including forming a government to facilitate elections. He highlighted the division among influential Western nations and the influence of China and Russia, which have contributed to the lack of international agreement on resolving Libya’s crisis.

Consequently, the House of Representatives and the State Council find limited options to progress the roadmap and rely on the people’s power to pressure all parties to act in their best interest.

Aqeel emphasized the need for the UN mission to focus its efforts on parties obstructing progress and perpetuating the power dynamic that hinders elections.
