The Kremlin voiced its apprehensions on Monday, about the developments in Niger. Following the ousting of the country’s president through a coup last week, the incident received condemnation from various nations. Of particular note, the head of Russia’s mercenary Wagner group, a company with significant interests in Africa, expressed approval for the coup.

During a call with reporters, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov expressed serious concern over the unfolding events in Niger.

According to Peskov, the Kremlin supports the prompt reestablishment of the rule of law in Niger. They also advocate for restraint from all parties involved to prevent any human casualties during the situation.

Last Friday, the coup leaders in Niger declared General Abdourahamane Tiani as the new head of state. This came just days after they claimed to have ousted President Mohamed Bazoum, marking the seventh military takeover in West and Central Africa within a span of less than three years.

In light of the Niger coup, West African nations have taken decisive action by imposing sanctions and issuing a stern ultimatum to the coup leaders. They demand the prompt reinstatement of President Mohamed Bazoum within a week, or they threaten the possibility of military intervention.
