The Congolese authorities have implemented heightened security measures in the capital city of Kinshasa in response to apprehensions regarding the safety of athletes participating in the upcoming International Francophone Games, scheduled to commence this week. The government has taken this initiative to ensure the well-being and protection of all participants and visitors during the event.

Preceding the event, approximately 4,500 additional police personnel, supported by state security agents, have been mobilized and deployed, as disclosed by the game’s coordinator, Isidor Kwanja. This significant reinforcement of security forces aims to fortify the safety measures in place and create a secure environment for all attendees and participants during the International Francophone Games.

As part of the comprehensive security arrangements, athletes will receive personalized police escorts, ensuring their safety throughout the duration of the International Francophone Games. Moreover, their accommodations have been equipped with state-of-the-art surveillance cameras to enhance security monitoring and provide an added layer of protection. These meticulous measures underscore the commitment of the organizers and authorities to safeguarding the well-being of the athletes and maintaining a secure atmosphere during the event.

The inadequate security situation in the city represents the most recent challenge faced by the organizers of the 10-day Jeux de la Francophonie. Notably, the event had already encountered setbacks, necessitating a two-year delay from its initially planned date in 2021. This decision was taken to facilitate the improvement and upgradation of infrastructure to meet international standards. Despite these obstacles, the organizers remain committed to overcoming challenges and delivering a successful and memorable International Francophone Games experience for all participants and attendees.

In the lead-up to the event, authorities have been working tirelessly to complete the necessary infrastructure for the International Francophone Games, which is set to begin on July 28. Despite their efforts, some participants have raised concerns about safety in Kinshasa due to the prevalence of petty crime, muggings, and kidnappings for ransom in the city. The organizers and authorities are fully aware of these challenges and are dedicated to addressing security matters to ensure a safe and successful event for everyone involved.

The upcoming International Francophone Games are set to host a diverse gathering of around 3,000 athletes representing over 40 countries. This quadrennial event, dedicated to promoting the French language, brings together participants from various corners of the globe. The Games serve as a celebration of linguistic and cultural diversity, fostering connections and understanding among nations through the common thread of the French language.
