Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has called upon gas experts to determine the cause of the devastating gas explosion that shook Johannesburg’s CBD on Wednesday evening. The explosion claimed one life and left 48 others injured, causing havoc as it overturned vehicles and caused extensive damage to sections of Bree Street and Rissik Street.

In a media briefing on Thursday, Premier Lesufi confirmed the incident as a gas explosion but highlighted that the exact cause remains unknown. The safety of surrounding buildings on Rissik Street and Bree Street raised concern among experts, prompting an assessment of their stability and potential risks.

Prioritizing public safety, authorities are taking measures to evaluate the possibility of another explosion and any potential damage to nearby structures. To facilitate a swift assessment of the physical infrastructure, the main road of Bree Street will be temporarily closed. Premier Lesufi vowed to provide ongoing updates throughout the day as the investigation continues.
