The UN says it is “horrified” by the situation in Sudan. Its secretary general, Antonio Guterres, once again demanded an end to the fighting between the army of General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the paramilitaries of General Mohamed Hamdan Daglo known as Hemedti, while condemning a bloody bombardment on the population which would have killed 22 on Saturday July 8th, according to the Sudanese Ministry of Health.

Several witnesses speak of an attack from the air. The bombs fell on the Dar es Salaam district of Omdurman, in the northwestern suburbs of Khartoum. However, the national army is the only force to have fighter planes. Yet General al-Burhan’s forces denied any operation in the city on Saturday.

Nevertheless, the air attacks continued on Sunday, in particular against the center of Khartoum, not far from the presidential palace, according to several sources. On the ground, fighting also continued this time in the southern districts of the capital.

A situation that “horrifies” the UN Secretary-General. Antonio Guterres believes that Sudan is “on the brink of a total civil war potentially destabilizing for the entire region”.

Guterres said that he was “dismayed by the large-scale violence and the victims in Darfur”, in the west of the country. He also expressed concern over the newly reported fighting in North and South Kordofan, as well as in Blue Nile state, “with complete disregard for human rights”, he said.

Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts, failed so far, are nevertheless continuing with a summit of the regional organization Igad this Monday, July 10th in Addis Ababa. Egypt announced a summit on Thursday between neighbors of Sudan.
