ECOWAS: Tinubu Promises “Zero Tolerance” Against Coups

The new president of ECOWAS pledged on Saturday to strengthen the democratic gains of the West African region while guaranteeing respect for human rights and the rule of law.

Three member countries, Mali, Guinea, and Burkina Faso have suffered five coups since 2020, Bola Tinubu promised to engage in discussions with the leaders of these countries in transition for a return of power to civilians.

“Without democracy, there is no governance, there is no freedom, there is no rule of law. We will not allow coup after coup. state in the West African sub-region”, said Bola Tinubu, current president of ECOWAS.

Regarding peace and security, in a region threatened by terrorism, the President of ECOWAS, calls for the implementation of urgent actions to meet these challenges which hinder the progress and development of Africa from the West.

To this end, a commission responsible for examining security options in Mali with the end of the Minusma has 90 days to reflect and make proposals.
