The humanitarian aid organization, Gift of the Givers, is calling on South Africans to extend their support to those affected by the severe floods in the Western Cape. The region has been hit by destructive weather conditions, including heavy flooding, uprooted trees, damaged roads, and rockfalls, leaving many residents in desperate need of assistance.

Reports indicate that the floods have caused significant devastation in various communities across the province, prompting Gift of the Givers to launch a comprehensive response effort. The organization’s teams are currently on the ground, providing aid and support to flood victims in twelve affected areas, including Nyanga, Khayelitsha, Mitchells Plain, Atlantis, and Strand.

Recognizing the scale of the disaster, Gift of the Givers has decided to expand its assistance to additional areas, including Breede Valley, Theewaterskloof, and Saldanha Bay. Founder Imtiaz Sooliman revealed that they have received numerous distress calls from municipalities, disaster management agencies, and affected communities, highlighting the urgent need for help.

According to Sooliman, over 10,000 people in informal settlements along major routes like the N1, N2, and N7 have been severely impacted by the floods. Many have lost their homes, belongings, and food supplies. In a country already grappling with high levels of hunger, losing access to food has only intensified the crisis.

To address the immediate needs of the affected communities, Gift of the Givers has identified several crucial items required for assistance. These include blankets, disposable nappies, hot meals, food parcels, and school stationery. The organization has shared details on how individuals can contribute on their social media platforms, emphasizing that even cash donations would be greatly appreciated.

Sooliman expressed his gratitude to corporate companies that have already shown swift and generous support in these trying times. He also urged the public to deposit their contributions into Gift of the Givers’ bank account, with specific instructions provided on their social media channels. Those assisting are encouraged to send the deposit slip to receive a Section 18A tax certificate.
