the Enugu State Police Command has apprehended a 21-year-old man named Augustine Akor on charges of allegedly raping and brutally murdering a teenage girl, identified as Faith Akuji. Shockingly, the victim is reported to be a relative of the accused.

According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the arrest took place on June 12th, 2023. Dedicated operatives from the Igbo-Eze North Division, in collaboration with the Neighbourhood Watch Group, successfully apprehended the suspect at approximately 9:30 am.

The 21-year-old suspect, hailing from Ette in Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area, stands accused of committing the heinous crime on June 8th. The victim, a 16-year-old girl, allegedly fell prey to his savage acts in a bush located in the Mpole-Ubere area of the Ette community. It is believed that the suspect resorted to murder to conceal his vile deeds.

Preliminary investigation reveals that the victim had been reported missing since the evening hours of June 8, after being sent by her grandfather to grind cassava at the community center. Despite exhaustive efforts to locate her, her whereabouts remained unknown.

However, following the arrest of the suspect, a breakthrough occurred. The suspect confessed to forcefully dragging the victim into the bush, where he subjected her to sexual assault until she lost consciousness and tragically passed away.

Subsequently, the victim’s lifeless body, devoid of lower-body clothing, was discovered in the bush. Medical professionals at the hospital, to which her remains were evacuated, sadly confirmed her demise.

The case is currently under discreet investigation by the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department. The Police Public Relations Officer emphasized that upon the conclusion of the investigation, the suspect will be arraigned in court to face the consequences of his abhorrent actions.

The Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Ammani, vehemently condemned the incident, describing it as atrocious and unfathomable. He extended his heartfelt condolences to the grieving family and friends of the deceased victim. Determined to deliver justice swiftly, the commissioner has directed the thorough handling of the case and the timely conclusion of the investigation, with the ultimate aim of bringing the suspect before the court to face the full weight of the law.
