President Muhammadu Buhari has given his approval for the conferment of the Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) on the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun, Alli Okunmade II. This decision follows a request made by Senator Kola Balogun, who highlighted the notable achievements and contributions of the revered monarch.
As part of the 2023 Special National Honour Award, Oba Lekan Balogun is among the distinguished recipients to be awarded the CFR, which is considered the third highest honor in the country. Senator Balogun outlined the monarch’s journey, including his educational background, work experience, and political endeavors, demonstrating his worthiness of the prestigious recognition.
The senator emphasized the Olubadan’s political career, spanning from his involvement in the Peoples Redemption Party to his aspirations as a presidential candidate and later as a governorship candidate. Despite facing setbacks due to military interventions, Oba Lekan Balogun’s return to politics in 1999 saw him successfully winning the Senate seat for Oyo Central Senatorial District and assuming key roles in various Senate committees.
In addition to his political achievements, the Olubadan’s rise in the traditional chieftaincy hierarchy of Ibadanland culminated in his appointment as the Otun Olubadan before ascending to the esteemed throne on March 11, 2022. Furthermore, the monarch’s expertise extends beyond politics, as evidenced by his recent appointment as the Chancellor of Sa’adatu Rimi University of Education, Kano.
Senator Balogun concluded by highlighting Oba Balogun Aliiwo’s multifaceted persona, which encompasses his roles as a technocrat, author, scholar, astute politician, businessman, and philanthropist. With the President’s approval of the CFR award, the Olubadan of Ibadanland’s significant contributions to society and leadership will be duly recognized and celebrated.
