The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) warned on Monday of the number of refugees in Chad who have fled the fighting between the armed forces and the rapid support forces for more than a month.

This number has increased rapidly according to the UNHCR and has reached almost 90,000 Sudanese refugees in Chad, while only three days ago, the UN estimated the number at 76,000, said UNHCR Assistant High Commissioner for Operations, N’Djamena Raouf Mazou in a statement to the press.

In this sense, Mr. Mazou mentioned a number that exceeds 250,000 people who have left Sudan for neighboring countries since the start of the armed conflict on April 15th, at a time when the UN estimates the number of internally displaced persons and refugees at more than one million.

Mr. Mazou also added at the end of a 4-day visit to Chad that the Sudanese are mainly in makeshift camps in the east, knowing that more than 90% are women and children.

Thus, the Assistant High Commissioner warned that the rainy season will be another obstacle to assisting these refugees while commending Chad for its solidarity and appealing to the international community to provide urgent support to these refugees and share the burden with neighboring countries.

It should be noted that the United Nations and its partners launched on 17th May a $3 billion appeal for funds to assist the Sudanese and hundreds of thousands who are fleeing to neighboring countries.
